UNION LEADERSHIP TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE ON CONTINUING CRISIS AT TYSON LAKESIDE PLANT MONDAY, OCTOBER 17 IN BROOKS, ALBERTA Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, City Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor BROOKS, ALBERTA--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 17, 2005) - Michael. J. Fraser, National Director of UFCW Canada, and Douglas O'Halloran, President of UFCW Canada Local 401 will be briefing the media on Monday, October 17 at 1p.m. MT at a press conference in Brooks, Alberta regarding the volatile strike situation at Lakeside Packers in Brooks.

The strike commenced last Wednesday and since then three strikers, as well as the president of the local union have been assaulted and hospitalized for their injuries. At an emergency Alberta Labour Relations Board (ALRB) meeting held in Brooks on Sunday, the ALRB heard testimony from Local 401 President O'Halloran how he was almost killed last week when three cars driven by Lakeside management personnel forced his car off the road.

O'Halloran's testimony will be discussed at the press conference, as will the effect of a court injunction issued last week setting a limit of only 50 picketers outside the plant.

National Director Michael J. Fraser will discuss UFCW Canada's national response and the need for the Paul Martin and the federal government to step in if the Alberta government and premier Klein continue to stand back from the evolving crisis.

Following Fraser & O'Halloran's statements the media conference will be open to Q&A.
