Mesothelioma is a fatal cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. The Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) series prepared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), states that during 1999-2005, a total of 18,068 malignant mesothelioma deaths were reported in the United States. This represents approximately 2,000 to 3,000 cases annually, continuing to affect construction workers, US Navy veterans and many others exposed to asbestos before it was partially banned in the early 1990s. Because the disease does not manifest itself for years after exposure, mesothelioma will continue to claim victims for the foreseeable future.
