Attracting Top Talent in Tight Market Requires Unconventional Tactic

Attention: Arts/Entertainment Editor, Assignment Editor, City Editor, Lifestyle Editor, Tech/Telecomm Editor CALGARY, ALBERTA --(CCNMatthews - Jan. 24, 2006) - Availability of proven technology talent was a perk of the technology bust for employers five years ago. The tables have turned in Calgary, as the labour force has again grown tight. It's now taking more unconventional means to recruit not only oil field workers but also seasoned technology talent.

"Competing for and connecting with technology talent in Calgary is becoming increasingly difficult," says Shelley Kuipers, president of Material Insight, a Calgary-based consulting firm that specializes in recruitment, marketing and technology commercialization for many of Calgary's emerging technology companies.

It's estimated that 90,000 new jobs may be created in Calgary over the next five years, and population growth is not expected to fill the talent gap. Many businesses rely heavily on technology and customer service, therefore winning the attention of recruits is critical for Calgary companies to grow and compete internationally.

"We've seen demand for people more than double in the last eight months, as our clients have ramped up their pace of growth," commented Kuipers. "At the current pace, we expect to place at least 125 new hires from Calgary and across Canada in 2006. That's 200 per cent more than in 2005."

Material Insight will host the second of its unconventional Picture This networking events on Wednesday, February 1 to attract talented software developers to some of the city's most enterprising and ambitious young businesses. More than 100 developers attended the first Picture This event in November 2005. Already more than 50 have registered to attend the sequel with Serenity showing at a private room at The Uptown Theatre. The event pairs a movie and free drinks to motivate Calgary's software developer community to connect with technology companies.
