ATU support NDP's call for increased protection for transit workers

ATU Canadian Council and CAW stood together Wednesday on Parliament Hill to support Federal NDP MP Peter Julian’s motion for increased protection for transit workers

Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor, Transportation Editor TORONTO, ONATRIO--(Marketwire - June 14, 2007) - The Amalgamated Transit Union, the largest transit union in Canada representing over 28,000 transit workers has joint forces with CAW to call for an all party support on a motion in Parliament that would see stiffer sentences for those found guilty of assaulting transit workers.

An ATU survey done in 2005 show that 36% of transit workers have been physically assaulted during their career and a Vector Poll on public opinion done in 2006 for the ATU shows that 81% of the general public believe that penalties for attacks on transit workers should be the same as attacks against airline personnel.

"Ultimately transit workers should be able to feel safe and secure in their workplace. Violence on transit workers is a growing problem that requires intervention" says Robin West ATU Canadian Director. "Action needs to be taken now"

This motion by NDP MP Peter Julian, calls on the government to award transit workers the same protections under the Criminal Code of Canada as police and ambulance personnel who are assaulted while performing their duties, by establishing stiffer penalties for those found guilty of assaulting transit workers.

The ATU calls on the government and other political parties to work together and take the necessary steps to fast track this issue through the process in order to make the necessary changes to the Criminal Code of Canada to protect transit workers.
