August Housing Starts in Halifax

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - Sept. 9, 2010) - New residential construction in Halifax decreased last month compared to August 2009. According to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's (CMHC's) preliminary data1 released today for Halifax, there were 134 housing starts last month, compared to 229 starts recorded in August 2009.

"Following a strong performance in July, there were no new apartment buildings that began construction in August," said Matthew Gilmore, senior market analyst with CMHC's Atlantic Business Centre. "Continued strength in single-detached starts helped to partially offset the decline in multiple unit starts last month. Single starts in August were at their highest level for the month since 2005 when 123 units were started." Gilmore added.

In urban centres across Canada in August there were 14,253 total housing starts, 12 per cent more than the 12,734 starts recorded in August of 2009. There were 6,123 single- detached starts last month, an increase of 10 per cent compared to August of 2009. Multi-residential starts were up 14 per cent to 8,130 in August of 2010. In Atlantic Canada, there were 847 housing starts posted compared to 907 in August of last year, a decrease of 7 per cent.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally sustainable and affordable homes. CMHC also provides reliable, impartial and up-to-date housing market reports, analysis and knowledge to support and assist consumers and the housing industry in making vital decisions.
