August Housing Starts in New Brunswick

MONCTON, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - Sept. 11, 2012) - Residential construction activity in New Brunswick's urban centres was up in August according to figures released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Preliminary data1 indicate that a total of 268 starts were recorded during the month compared to 182 starts for the same period in 2011.

"The year-over-year increase in residential construction activity observed in August was mostly the result of strong construction activity in the rental market, particularly in the Fredericton CA," said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's senior market analyst for New Brunswick. Overall, there were 141 multiple starts recorded in provincial urban centres in August of this year compared to 70 multiple starts last year. Single starts were also up in August, with a 13 per cent, year-over-year increase to 127 units.

In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in August increased 19 per cent to 17,725 units compared to 14,938 a year ago. Single-detached starts decreased five per cent to 6,015 units, while multiple starts increased 36 per cent to 11,710 units in August. In the Atlantic region, 1,112 new units were started compared to 795 during August 2011.
