August Housing Starts Remain Higher in St. Catharines-Niagara

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 9, 2010) - Preliminary data for August 2010 released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) for the St. Catharines-Niagara Census Metropolitan Area(1) (CMA) show housing starts increased to 67 units from 55 units in August 2009.

New construction in August 2010 was supported by an increase in starts of both townhouses single-detached homes. On a year-to-date basis, construction began on 758 homes, up strongly from the 502 units started in the same eight months of 2009. All municipalities in the CMA reported higher or steady starts, except Niagara Falls, Wainfleet, and Welland.

"Starts in St. Catharines-Niagara have shown a strong recovery from lower levels of early 2009," said Ashot Karapetyan, Market Analyst with CMHC. "In August, although still higher than last year, starts settled back to a sustainable level," added Karapetyan.
