August Is Coming: It's Time for Quebec's Wild Blueberries!

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - July 21, 2009) - When August rolls around, Quebec's increasingly popular wild blueberry becomes the undisputed favorite berry among Quebeckers. Fans of this little blue wonder will no doubt be thrilled to learn that, according to the province's blueberry growers, the 2009 wild blueberry season should be exceptional.

"Weather conditions in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region have once again been favorable to blueberry growing," explains Daniel Simard, Director of the Syndicat des producteurs de bleuets du Quebec. "Alternating heat and humid spells create the perfect conditions to encourage the fruiting of blueberry trees, and they have a lot of blossoms this year, which usually translates into an excellent harvest. The blueberries are already formed, and the bunches are a good size and are bursting with berries! This is indeed another great season for our growers."

The 2008 harvest set an historic record, with growers picking over 70 million pounds of blueberries, a third more than a regular harvest. "It's still too early to predict whether the 2009 harvest will be as bountiful, but one thing is certain: Quebeckers will be able to enjoy the benefits of Quebec-grown wild blueberries as of mid-August," states Simard.

BLUE power: fresh or frozen!

Keep an eye out for fresh wild blueberries in Quebec public markets and supermarkets, and don't forget to stock up on these delicious berries, which you can freeze and add to your favorite recipes year-round. You can also find Quebec-grown wild blueberries in the frozen food section throughout the year.

The unique flavor and health benefits of wild blueberries are very tangible. Indeed, wild blueberries are full of natural antioxidants, which help fight cellular aging and prevent the onset of heart disease. However, it's their sweet and unique taste that wins us over! Just add a little blue, either fresh or frozen, to your daily diet. It's a smart choice!
