Aurora Solar Technologies Provides Technology Update and Announces Three New Patent Allowances

NORTH VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - June 23, 2015) - Aurora Solar Technologies Inc. ("Aurora") (TSX VENTURE:ACU), a leader in inline measurement and control technology for the photovoltaic manufacturing industry, is pleased to provide a technology update and announce the allowance of new patent protection in three key markets.

Significant highlights include:

  • Protection for Aurora's pending patent "Process for Improving the Production of Photovoltaic Products" has been allowed in Europe, China and Japan. This patent is for a proprietary method to use inline measurement and control to optimize the quality of manufacturing solar cells. Additionally, in September 2014, US patent 8,829,442 was granted for Aurora's Decima inline measurement technology. The company is also in the process of filing additional patent applications pertaining to its Veritas™ and Decima™ products and their applications.
  • Aurora's Veritas product introduced a new method to measure and understand the performance of the solar cell emitter diffusion process step. Emitter formation is one of the most important elements of cell manufacturing, and is a critical process step to realize higher efficiency and improved bin distributions. The new method spatially maps batch-to-batch performance of diffusion or annealing furnaces in each tube, boat and wafer position, producing detailed, valuable process information analogous to that of an MRI or CT scan. It reveals critical emitter parameters on every wafer and enables true visualization of process performance and consistency.
  • In response to customer demand, we have developed a new high-density measurement version of the Decima, which integrates easily with plant automation. Additionally, we enhanced the Decima's ruggedness and precision based on field experience in multiple production line installations.

"Aurora's Decima measurement systems have processed millions of solar cell wafers in industrial production lines worldwide. In the past nine months, using this experience and in response to practical industrial needs and demand, we have significantly advanced our technology and intellectual property position," said Gordon Deans, Aurora's Chief Technology Officer. "Our products are robust, accurate and easy to use in day-to-day industrial applications. Consequently, they are increasingly recognized by customers and partners as a superior solution to their needs."

Besides volume production measurements, Aurora has evaluated thousands of wafers from manufacturers and diffusion equipment providers who have expressed interest in the use of Aurora's products. One Chinese manufacturer alone sent 1300 wafers to Aurora to evaluate across furnaces supplied from European and Chinese suppliers. Wafers evaluated by the Decima range from standard commercial p-type multicrystalline units to high-efficiency designs including bifacial, p-type and n-type monocrystalline and PERC. The Decima has successfully measured critical-to-quality properties in all of these designs. Furthermore, these wafers were produced by a variety of diffusion/annealing furnaces from leading industry suppliers in Europe, China and Japan.

Aurora's Veritas and Decima technology is installed and in use for industrial production and process optimization in multiple locations in Asia and Europe.
