Austin, Houston, and Dallas Hair Transplant Surgeon Explains Differences Between FUT and FUE Restoration Techniques

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwired - Mar 8, 2016) - The field of hair replacement has come a long way from the "hair plug" look that was often previously associated with hair loss surgery. Dr. Bernardino Arocha, a Dallas, Austin, and Houston hair replacement surgeon says techniques have advanced to such a degree that hair follicles can now be precisely and meticulously placed in areas of thinning or balding hair in both men and women, allowing for results that look as though the hair had never been lost in the first place. Two of the more common techniques utilized in hair restoration surgery are Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). While both FUE and FUT offer patients a range of benefits, Dr. Arocha says, there are some distinctions between them that may indicate that one is a better treatment than the other for individuals considering hair restoration surgery.

Surgical hair replacement typically involves the transplantation of healthy, permanently growing hairs from the back or sides of the head to other areas where hair has fallen out. Dr. Arocha says finding a surgeon who is experienced and skilled in the field of hair loss treatment and who utilizes advanced techniques for the actual surgery is the key combination to successful hair transplantation. FUT is one of those techniques. Dr. Arocha explains that FUT requires a harvesting of a strip of healthy hair, medically referred to as "permanent donor zone hair grafts." These hair grafts are then dissected under a microscope and transplanted onto the area targeted for treatment. Dr. Arocha says FUT is often better suited to patients experiencing large areas of hair loss. He notes that, while this technique often yields very natural-looking results, patients can expect a linear scar in the donor area following the procedure; however, Dr. Arocha says this can typically be well-concealed under the hair that surrounds it in patients who are not planning to wear their hair short.

Dr. Arocha says FUE can result in much less visible scarring when a .9 mm or smaller punch is employed. FUE involves removing follicular units directly from the donor area, which can allow patients to wear their hair at a very short length without concern about visible scarring. Dr. Arocha says this method is often beneficial for men who are in the military and others who shave their heads on a regular basis. Another advantage of FUE, he notes, is that it typically results in less recovery time. With that in mind, Dr. Arocha says FUE can be a more time-consuming treatment than alternative techniques, particularly in cases of large areas of hair loss. A trade off is that there may be less total grafts available for transplantation.

Ultimately, Dr. Arocha reveals, both FUT and FUE techniques are revolutionary hair restoration procedures that can be used for traditional hair loss concerns as well as facial hair transplantation. He says that every patient has unique needs and goals, and the best treatment option can be determined once the individual has been evaluated and their concerns have been addressed.
