BEND, OR--(Marketwire - Jun 21, 2012) - Cafe2U, which transformed the way that people buy coffee in Australia and the United Kingdom, is duplicating the feat in the United States. The first few Cafe2U franchises have opened and are exceeding sales projections. The Australian company plans to open over 1,000 additional franchise locations in the U.S. within the next 5-10 years.
Cafe2U pioneered the idea of mobile espresso served from a van. The company began on the northern beaches of Sydney, serving surfers who wanted access to great coffee without leaving the beach. Cafe2U soon discovered a much bigger and more lucrative group of customers: Workers in industrial areas and office parks who craved premium coffee, but who had no access to a coffee shop.
Cafe2U mobile espresso vans deliver coffee to customers on a route, Monday through Friday, serving a variety of businesses each day. Cafe2U vans also appear at events.
Cafe2U isn't bluffing when it calls its coffee "premium." It won a bronze medal at the 2010 CSR Golden Bean Roasting Competition, where Cafe2U's coffee blend competed against 1,200 entries in international competition. Each Cafe2U van carries a $7,000 espresso machine, a $1,000 grinder and other equipment typically found at high-end coffee shops.
"Customers can be skeptical the first time they hear about getting coffee from a van, but then they see the equipment that we use and they taste our latté, cappuccino, mocha or chai," said Scott Bundy, president and CEO of Cafe2U. The first American franchisees -- Bob Crossman of Clovis, CA, and Serena Liu or Eugene, OR -- have exceeded sales projections and found the mobile espresso niche to be far underserved in the U.S. The Eugene location is already expanding to a second franchise route to meet demand. Cafe2U is planning opening in Colorado, Georgia and Texas later this year.
Cafe2U grew from 12 vans in Australia in 2005 to over 200 vans in operation in Australia, the UK and now the U.S. Cafe2U has captured 4% of Australia's total coffee market in just seven years and outperformed Starbucks when it expanded to Australia. Cafe2U is eager to replicate that success in the U.S., which has the world's largest coffee market, valued at $19 billion according to the National Coffee Association.
