Author Michael Pollan to Launch the Petraia Sessions for 2009

Famous Chefs and Authors Share their Insights into Sustainable Agriculture and Cuisine at Exclusive Tuscan Retreat

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 25, 2009) - Luxury Agriturismo La Petraia and Trufflepig Travel Inc. announce the launch of The Petraia Sessions in which eight people can join a celebrated chef or author for five days of cooking classes, unique excursions and thought-provoking discussions at La Petraia, a farm set high in the Chianti Mountains in the heart of Tuscany's oldest wine region, the Chianti Classico zone. Award-winning author Michael Pollan will launch the first session in the series to be held at La Petraia from July 13 to July 18th.

La Petraia is a unique Tuscan hideaway owned and operated since 2001 by chef and award-winning author Susan McKenna Grant and her husband Michael Grant. The 900 year old property has been fully restored, brought back to organic agricultural life and offers guests luxury accommodation and fine dining.

"How we nourish the global population and an ailing planet simultaneously is one of the essential questions of our time. With The Petraia Sessions our guests will be fortunate to spend an intimate week with some of the pioneers, practitioners and theorists devoted to that question," says Michael Grant.

Michael Pollan is one of the most inventive and influential food writers to emerge in recent decades. His best-selling books, which include In Defense of Food, The Omnivore's Dilemma and The Botany of Desire, and numerous articles in The New York Times and elsewhere have lead us to a new consciousness about what we eat and a growing awareness of the difficulties we face in feeding ourselves in an economically and environmentally sustainable way.

During his session in July, Pollan will share his ideas on how the lessons of the garden can help us navigate our relationship to the environment, the anthropology of cooking and how cooking made us human, and the 'Obama Moment': the potential for reform from the White House Garden to the Farm Bill and the World Bank.

The program will include formal talks by Pollan but the topics will be in the air throughout the week as guests join him in discovering how some of the founding principles of sustainability remain embodied in the lives of artisans in the hidden corners of Tuscan life and in Petraia's journey to organic and biodynamic agriculture.

One of Canada's most celebrated chefs, Jamie Kennedy, will lead the second session in October. Kennedy is known for his legendary commitment to environmental issues and his support for organic agriculture, local producers and traditional methods. He has owned and operated a series of landmark restaurants in Toronto and is the author of "Seasons", a cookbook presenting innovative recipes that celebrate the seasonal produce of Canada and the food it inspires. Jamie's session will focus on hands-on cooking and foraging classes from the master himself.
