AVACOS Solar Features SANYO HIT Bifacial Modules in Groundbreaking Green Residential Project in Mid-Town Toronto

WOODBRIDGE, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 13, 2010) -

Attention News/Assignment Editors: A photo for this release will be available via Marketwire on the picture wire of The Canadian Press.

AVACOS Solar (AVACOS) announces the completion of an innovative green residential project that features SANYO HIT® Double modules combined with Tio-Coat, the DuROCK Alfacing International Ltd. (DuROCK) roofing membrane, as well as a building-integrated solar array and a host of other green building technologies.

Following the success of the integrated commercial pilot project on DuROCK's headquarters, this 4.6kW solar installation, located in a mid-town Toronto neighbourhood, is the first Canadian residential installation that combines SANYO HIT® bifacial modules with DuROCK's Tio-Coat roofing membrane (www.tiocoat.com).

SANYO HIT® Double PV modules generate power from both sides, resulting in up to 30 per cent higher energy output than standard single-sided PV modules, making them ideal for carports, canopies and porch coverings. DuROCK Tio-Coat is a high-strength white elastomeric urethane roof coating that provides 89 per cent solar radiation reflectivity and weather resistance, reducing the energy usage required for the building compared to traditional roof coverings.

Together, the overall performance of the solar array is improved due to the cooling effect of Tio-Coat on the roof and the additional reflectivity providing light for the back side of the bifacial modules.

"We are excited to see this innovative solution spread from commercial applications to residential projects," said Koshi Terakawa, President of SANYO Canada Inc. "The synergy generated by these technologies only adds value for the end user."

Vying for LEED Platinum certification, the project also provided the opportunity to integrate a variety of additional green solutions, including geothermal heating and cooling, R-35 insulation for the exterior walls, reclaimed building materials, and low-flow bathroom fixtures, among many others.

The project also brought together several companies that were instrumental in bringing this green project to fruition. Based on the vision of architect William Dewson and the interior design of Andrew Pike Interiors, South Park Design Build oversaw the construction of the project, while Schletter Inc. provided the racking solution that made the innovative solar aspect possible.

"Creative solar solutions such as this truly highlight the potential for renewable and sustainable technologies," said Steven Costa, Executive Director of AVACOS Solar Energy. "Along with the environmental benefits of investing in solar energy, forward-thinking homeowners and corporations are realizing an attractive return on that investment through Ontario's Feed-In Tariff Program."

In raising the bar for integrated environmental building solutions, AVACOS and SANYO hope to apply this level of sophistication across Ontario and the rest of Canada, utilizing the technological innovations of the SANYO HIT modules.
