Avaya and Raytheon to Install First Avaya IP Phones Aboard U.S. Navy Ships

SANTA CLARA, CA--(Marketwired - Oct 23, 2013) -

  • A successful "Design Verification Test" clears the way for Avaya 9600 Series IP Phone to be used on the San Antonio-Class LPD-26 and LPD-27.

Today Avaya Government Solutions announced that the first Avaya IP phones have been approved for use on U.S. Navy San Antonio-Class amphibious warships. The phones will be installed aboard the John P. Murtha (LPD-26) and the Portland (LPD-27) amphibious transport dock ship.

Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) is the systems integrator for the project. Both ships are being built at Huntington Ingalls Industries' (NYSE: HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss.

Avaya's IP-based unified communication (UC) systems -- based on an Avaya Aura® collaboration platform -- have been used on U.S. Navy ships for many years with traditional analog and digital endpoints.

To clear the way for use of Avaya IP phones on LDP-class amphibious warships, Raytheon and Avaya Government Solutions conducted a "Design Verification Test" for the LPD-17 Ship Program Office (PMS 317). The test confirmed that Avaya 9611G IP Phones used in conjunction with Avaya Aura Communication Manager meet the Navy's demanding redundancy, reliability and resiliency requirements for shipboard use. The phones are known for exceptionally clear audio and for the lowest power consumption in the industry. They feature a large color touch-screen display for ready access to key functions.

Avaya communications systems integrate with the Navy's tactical, mission-critical shipboard communications infrastructure and currently support command and control on more than 90 U.S. Navy combat and support ships fleet-wide.
