Avaya Earns Edison Award for Innovations Increasing Reliability and Resiliency in Collaboration and Communications Technology

SANTA CLARA, CA--(Marketwired - Nov 6, 2014) -

  • 2014 Edison Award received for the ability to quickly identify the cause of performance issues in enterprise voice, video and data transmissions
  • Award highlights Avaya's ongoing focus and investment in communications and collaboration solutions that meet the changing demands of business
  • Fourth consecutive year R&D Council of NJ recognizes patents from Avaya's portfolio of nearly 6000 patents and patent applications worldwide

Avaya announced today it has won the 2014 Edison Award for information technology from the R&D Council of NJ, validating the company's ongoing focus in research and development of highly innovative solutions in all aspects of collaboration and communications technology for enterprises.

The award will be presented during a ceremony at the Liberty Science Center in New Jersey this evening. This is the fourth consecutive year that Avaya has been recognized with an Edison Award for a patent within its portfolio of nearly 6,000 patents and patents pending worldwide.

This year, Avaya is recognized with a patent award in the information technology category for "Method and Apparatus for Automatic Determination of Performance Problem Locations in a Network" (U.S. Patent 7,408,885). The invention is a process for quickly identifying the location and root cause of network performance problems when voice, video, and data are carried over an Internet Protocol (IP) Network. The method applies equally well to paths at the network layer and the data link layer. The inventors include Lorraine Denby, Bengi Karacali, and the late Jean Meloche.

The achievement underscores Avaya's ongoing investments in R&D to enable technology to deliver high-quality engagement experiences among employees, customers and partners. Avaya's R&D investments of more than 17 percent of product revenue continue to outpace the industry average of 14 percent. Avaya has consistently ranked among the top 20 telecom and communications companies for number of patents issued each year.

This year's award follows previous Edison Awards received by Avaya for collaboration and communications capabilities including: a unique method of disaster recovery now available in the Avaya Aura® communications core; for a distinctive method of collaboration that enables people to simultaneously and dynamically manage conferencing sessions, and for the groundbreaking ability to link desktop telephone extensions to end user's mobile devices -- a patent that became the foundation of the company's worldwide leadership in mobility.

The Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award is granted each year by the R&D Council of New Jersey to honor the noteworthy efforts of scientists and inventors, as well as their organizations.
