GENEVA, SWITZERLAND--(Marketwired - December 13, 2016) - In order to offer its patients unparalleled care, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Geneva University Hospitals (Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève, HUG) has implemented the Avaya Scopia video conferencing system from Avaya, a global leader in business communications software, systems and services. The system enables mothers and families to watch over their premature babies, an opportunity which helps to provide comfort at such a critical stage of life.
Offering video conferencing for families is not a new concept for HUG. However, their previous system consisted of only one pair of laptops (one for each side of the call), which led to difficulties when new users had to familiarize with the functionalities. At such a difficult and emotional time for families, having to wrench their focus away from their babies was an integral factor behind deciding to switch to a new video conferencing system. In addition, mothers are often discharged before their babies, and a lack of contact makes such a sensitive time even more stressful.
Since the installation of Avaya Scopia, families have been able to watch their babies in the Neonatal Unit in real-time; while it may be a small gesture, these sort of actions make all the difference for those having to go through the ICU experience. The system is a simplified, agile infrastructure, which is scalable and cost-effective; perfect for facilities spanning a range of sizes. The seamless integration enables staff to focus exclusively on patient care, without having to spend their precious time dealing with technical issues. Furthermore, Avaya's software is changing the way medical staffs at the facility are trained, and means that off-site specialist doctors are able to be reached more directly.
The introduction of the Avaya Scopia system has led to a high level of patient satisfaction, with parents expressing their appreciation for the technology. With such wide-ranging interoperability, Avaya's system helps to contribute to the hospital's pioneering approach towards neonatal care.
Yann Levy-Jamet, Application Advisor, Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève:
"Parents and staff love Avaya Scopia. Mothers are able to see their baby on their preferred devices -- laptops, tablets, smartphones -- and access the video conference via a freely distributed client, reducing the worry and speeding up recovery. This reduces the time nurses have to spend updating patients, keeps traffic in the ward down, and phone lines open for emergencies."
Patrik Spörri, Managing Director, Avaya:
"Avaya Scopia offers various areas of application -- from face-to-face collaboration with colleagues to new concepts that really make a change in the lives of the users. Thanks to the powerful video technology users can experience video feeds in high resolution showing every detail of the new born child."
