Aventail EX-1500 SSL VPN Wins Editor's Choice Award With Five-Star Rating by IT Week

Aventail Lauded for Its Security, Manageability, and Ease of Use

SEATTLE, WA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- August 4, 2005 -- The Aventail EX-1500 SSL VPN ( received the Editor's Choice Award and the highest possible five-star ranking in a just released product review by IT Week magazine. The review recognized Aventail for its End Point Control, market-leading Cache Control and Smart Access technology features.

"This is one really rock-solid VPN appliance; it is one of the most secure we've seen. It well deserves our Editor's Choice Award," said Ken Durham, reviews editor for IT Week magazine, the largest all digital newsweekly for IT professionals in the U.S. "We think our readers will be wowed by this device."

The reviewer highlighted Aventail's End Point Control, which ensures maximum security and control for remote access. Aventail's End Point Control allows administrators to set granular access rules based on the level of trust for an end point. An administrator can create multiple Aventail Policy Zones, such as Trusted, Semi-trusted, or Un-trusted, something not possible with any other SSL VPN on the market. All other SSL VPNs have only two options, on and off, whereas customers need three or more zones to accommodate the range of trust on an end device and the range of access requirements.

"This product does the best job of protecting itself and its corporate environment from undesired VPN entry, unscrupulous hackers and data transport theft," the review stated.

In addition to Policy Zones, IT Week lauded Aventail's Cache Control feature that makes sure no sensitive data is left behind. "We really love the Cache Control feature of the EX-1500. Depending on the client's configuration policies, the appliance and client control can effectively remove all history, temporary data and downloaded files once the SSL VPN session has concluded."

This reviewer found the Aventail appliance to be simple to set up validating Aventail's claim that it only takes 30 minutes or less to get the box up and running. The review noted, "Configuration...was quite easy to accomplish using an easy-to-understand and highly maneuverable SSL browser-based program."

Ease of Use

Aventail Smart Access technology received top marks for its ease of use. Aventail Smart Access makes access easier, faster and more seamless for end users, because it automatically determines and deploys the most appropriate access method.

"The company's Smart Access technology polls the remote user's system and decides which security scheme would be most effective and whether the client can access the system by browser or through a software-based application. This technology requires no interaction on the client's side making the process quite transparent," stated the review.
