Aventail Launches Cisco VPN Replacement Campaign

Network Administrators and Users Can Now End Their Frustration With IPSec Remote Access by Trading in Cisco VPNs and Receiving Up to $100,000 in Rebates From Aventail

SEATTLE, WA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- November 8, 2005 -- Aventail is giving enterprises a big incentive to end the frustration with trying to make their Cisco IPSec VPNs work for remote access. Any enterprise that wants to trade in its Cisco IPSec or SSL VPN solution will receive up to $100,000 off the cost of a new Aventail SSL VPN appliance.

Aventail's Cisco VPN replacement campaign comes on the heels of a successful overall VPN replacement campaign, during which dozens of companies traded in underperforming VPNs by Cisco, Nortel, Juniper Networks, Watchguard, Novell, and others, for the Aventail SSL VPN. Since Cisco VPNs represented the majority of VPNs replaced, Aventail decided to re-launch a campaign focused just on Cisco remote access products.

All companies replacing their Cisco VPNs with Aventail will receive the latest Aventail platform, Aventail ST, just released last month. Now available worldwide, Aventail ST provides one secure gateway for all access scenarios. Aventail ST is the only VPN that is truly universal, providing a common end user experience and a centralized management model for all access methods, devices, users, and resources.

"While previous generations of SSL VPNs did not have the application reach or performance levels of IPSec VPNs, that is no longer true," said Michael Suby, senior analyst at Stratecast Partners (a division of Frost & Sullivan). "The SSL VPN technology leaders, like Aventail, now provide a remote access solution with robust end point security, ease of use, and full application reach, while also overcoming the limitations of IPSec, like NAT and firewall traversal, or requiring a pre-installed client."

With Aventail's solution, users gain access via a common gateway and receive the same ease of use, full application reach, and complete security, whether they are accessing from a home PC, café hotspot, Internet kiosk, or behind a firewall at a client's office. Administrators manage it all through Aventail's Unified Policy model, which provides a single rule set to manage all access. The Aventail SSL VPN works over any type of network connection, wired or wireless, with many Aventail customers using it to not only secure remote access but also traffic over their WLANs.

The Aventail SSL VPN can match an IPSec VPN in performance and application reach because of Aventail's patent-pending Smart Tunneling technology. Smart Tunneling is a Layer 3 tunnel with Layers 4 through 7 policy control, enabling a full IP network tunnel to be created over SSL. Smart Tunneling technology combines the power of SSL, which includes NAT and firewall traversal, granular policy control, and granular access control, with the performance and application reach of IPSec, including complex applications like VoIP.

"We have demonstrated in lab tests and heard from many customers that the Aventail SSL VPN can handle all remote access scenarios better than the Cisco VPN in terms of ease of use, management, performance, and total cost of ownership," said Aventail COO Lewis Carpenter. "I welcome all companies to test our products head to head and see the results for themselves."

In recent throughput testing, Aventail's Smart Tunneling technology delivered twice the performance of Cisco's WebVPN and IPSec VPN products. The Aventail SSL VPN was significantly faster in all but one of the tests, which compared file transfer times for the download and upload of 1MB and 50MB files. For example, the Aventail VPN transferred a 50 Megabyte FTP file in 13.62 seconds, compared with 304 seconds for the Cisco WebVPN and 37 seconds for the Cisco IPSec VPN.
