Avima Gives Food a Chance

NORWICH, UK--(Marketwire - Nov 7, 2011) - In case you're wondering, Avima is an acronym and nothing to do with any place of that name -- there are one or two in Africa. It stands for agricultural, veterinary and industrial manufacturing and marketing. The name reflects a change of direction the 50 year old business took in the 1970s when it moved from being just a producer of stored grain related pesticides to also include pesticides for crop protection, public health and migratory pests.

Food production can't do without pesticides, and properly used they present little hazards these days. This is a highly regulated industry, says Director Edwin Butler, with international treaties such as the Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, and for farmers EurepGAP, as well as the respective government regulations in every country to control it. Avima goes well beyond compliance though. Avima -- as a member of Croplife SA, which is affiliated to the global body dedicated to sustainable agriculture, CropLife International -- works to a rigorous code of conduct and best practice.
