NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ--(Marketwire - Nov 28, 2012) - AXION International Holdings, Inc. (OTCBB: AXIH), a leader in recycled plastic and plastic composite technologies used to produce ECOTRAX™ rail ties and STRUXURE™ building products, today announced it has received its third purchase order for an additional 270 switch ties, which are long rail ties, from its customer, San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART). The 100% recycled ECOTRAX™ switch ties are to be installed along more of BART's 104 miles of tracks.
AXION is experiencing continued market penetration in the transit line market which is characterized by rapid transit, subway and elevated railway systems in metropolitan areas for high capacity, high frequency passenger transport. ECOTRAX™ are also already sold and installed on major passenger and freight railways which span larger distances within and between states and provinces worldwide.
In addition to this latest purchase order from BART, AXION has also received purchase orders from two more public transit lines ranking in the top ten U.S. transit systems. These transit lines will conduct trials of ECOTRAX™ on their systems.
BART, a heavy-rail public transit and subway system connecting San Francisco with its suburbs, is ranked the 5th busiest heavy rail rapid transit system and the third largest by total passenger miles in the U.S., according to the American Public Transportation Association. The Federal Transit Administration designated BART the cleanest transit system in the United States.
"To put this order into perspective," said AXION's Material Supply Director, Ed Campbell, "we recycled approximately 738,000 high density polyethylene plastic bottles to make these railroad ties."
"This order from BART represents our customer's belief in our products and their value," stated AXION's CEO Steve Silverman. "It also proves that our specialty-application strategy in North America is working for AXION and for our customers. We are providing a quality product and valuable solution to their long-term problems."
"BART's dedication to the environment and the welfare of its passengers goes beyond using ECOTRAX™ in its system," Silverman added. "Our value proposition to BART and our other customers includes a higher long-term return on their investment in terms of the quality and durability of our products, in addition to the clear benefit of environmental stewardship."
Switch ties in lengths greater than 9 feet are used extensively by transit and freight railroad operators. As the length of ties increases, the acquisition of high quality, consistent timber becomes more difficult to procure. AXION engineers its products to exceed industry standards. From ECOTRAX™ tie number one through ECOTRAX™ tie number ten thousand, the ties are consistent, and produced to exceed expectations in the harshest conditions. All of AXION's products are impervious to moisture, rot, and insect infestation.
ECOTRAX™ composite railroad ties are made from AXION's patented, 100%-recycled plastic formulation. Because they are inert, ECOTRAX™ ties will not rot or absorb moisture, and they are impervious to insect infestation. Setting the industry standard for composite railroad ties, ECOTRAX™ ties meet and exceed all American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association specifications and are continuously tested at third-party laboratories and in track. ECOTRAX™ ties feature long life cycles and excel in the harshest conditions, making them a long-term, cost-effective choice in road crossings, switches and turnouts, open-deck bridges, and freight line track. From Australia to New York, ECOTRAX™ composite railroad ties are the tested, proven, and superior choice for railroads around the world.
