Back to Our Roots: Accessibility and the American Diabetes Association

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwired - November 18, 2015) - Today, we wrap up our blog series for Diabetes Awareness Month with a guest blog from Kevin Hagan, CEO of the American Diabetes Association, discussing the Association's goals for the month as well as his own personal experiences with diabetes.

As I approach the six-month mark of my tenure as CEO of the American Diabetes Association®, I'm honing in on what the Association means to Americans and what in turn they need from us. One way the Association is serving our communities is by providing trusted, helpful information about healthy lifestyles. This year's American Diabetes Month® theme, Eat Well America!℠, reflects my goal -- offering simple steps that are appealing to everyday people so that Americans can feel their best now and enjoy long-term health--whether they have diabetes or hope to prevent developing type 2 diabetes.

My common-sense approach to outreach this American Diabetes Month comes from my personal connection to diabetes, a familiarity that started long before I joined the Association. Both my parents and my brother-in-law live with diabetes. My beloved grandmother had type 2 diabetes, and I remember watching her labor over checking her blood glucose and dealing with poor circulation and other medical complications. Every day, I think of her, wishing that she had had access to the tools, resources, and support we offer that could have given her a better quality of life. It's why I do the work that I do today.
