Badminton Alberta: Canadian Jr National Badminton Championships

CANADIAN JR NATIONAL BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS, SHERWOOD PARK, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - April 23, 2009) - Sherwood Park will host the 2009 Canadian National Badminton Championships during the week of May 4th to 9th.

Over 350 of the best young badminton players from across Canada will converge on Millennium Place in Sherwood Park, to compete for a national badminton championship title. This competition will showcase elite athletes between 9 and 22 years of age in all four age defined categories for the first time.

Badminton is one of the world's most popular racquet sports. Requiring speed, strength, endurance, and precision, badminton play has recorded shuttlecock speeds of over 260 km/h. Especially popular in Asia and Europe badminton became a full competitive sport at the Olympic games in 1992.

The Opening ceremonies on Monday May 4h at 6 PM will feature the piping in of a parade of athletes, lion and dragon dancers, and local celebrities.
