OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 14, 2008) - The Canadian Red Cross is pleased to announce that nine financial institutions across Canada will be accepting cash donations to assist those affected by the Myanmar Cyclone. Donations will be accepted until June 13, 2008 at the following financial institutions:

BMO Financial Group
National Bank Financial Group
Canadian Western Bank
RBC
CIBC
Scotiabank
HSBC Bank Canada
TD Canada Trust
Laurentian Bank of Canada

"Since the cyclone struck, Canadians have generously supported the Red Cross response to this emergency," said Tim Hoswitschka, national corporate relations director, Canadian Red Cross. "Thanks to the participation of banks in Canada, it will be even easier for Canadians to donate at any of the nine financial institutions."

Tropical Cyclone Nargis has devastated large parts of Myanmar. Casualty figures continue to rise. Reports indicate that the cyclone has left more than 29,000 people dead, 41,000 missing and 1.5 million affected.

The Red Cross responded immediately to the disaster. Over 27,000 Myanmar Red Cross volunteers continue to work around the clock to reach and support those affected by the ferocious storm. By Friday, the Red Cross will have sent 17 flights, carrying a total of 130 tonnes of aid including: 20,000 mosquito nets, 2,450 tarpaulins and almost 15,000 jerry cans as well as emergency shelter supplies for 4,500 people and hygiene items for more than 600 people.
The Red Cross is appealing to the public to give generously to help those affected by Cyclone Nargis. Funds raised will be used to provide survivors with basic supplies, emergency shelter, and to ensure people have access to health care and clean water. More detailed assessments are being carried out to determine the longer-term needs of vulnerable communities.

Canadians wishing to help people affected by the cyclone are encouraged to contribute by donating online, at one of the nine financial institutions, calling 1-800-418-1111 or contacting their local Red Cross office. Cheques should be made payable to the Canadian Red Cross, earmarked "Myanmar Cyclone Appeal" and mailed to the Canadian Red Cross National Office, 170 Metcalfe Street, Suite 300, Ottawa, Ontario, K2P 2P2.

The Canadian Red Cross is a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which includes the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross and 186 national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
