Barbara Burkett, a teacher with the Ontario North East District School Board and vice-president of the Ontario North East ETFO Local, has been elected vice-president of the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO). The election took place at ETFO's annual meeting in Toronto.

"Effective leadership addresses member need, supports the health of the profession, and holds close a dedication to quality education for elementary students," Burkett told the 600 delegates attending the meeting. I support a union dedicated to strong collective bargaining, expert counseling and legal support, rich opportunities in professional development, and political and social activism directed by sincere concern for others.

"Our members deserve the unqualified support of a strong, cohesive leadership team. I am ready to be part of that team. I will lead with courage and vision. With a focus on the future, we will work together to foster solidarity and build for tomorrow," Burkett said.

Burkett, who lives in New Liskeard, has been a teacher for 25 years. She has taught students from kindergarten to grade eight. Burkett has served on the ETFO Provincial Executive since 2001 and on her local executive since 1999. Burkett will be on leave from the Ontario North East District School Board to serve as full-time vice-president in Toronto.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) represents 65,000 public elementary school teachers and education workers across Ontario and is the largest teacher union in Canada outside of Quebec.
