Barclays Capital Announces Senior Appointments in Canada

Ian Montgomery Appointed to Chief Operating Officer for Canada; John Kennedy Appointed to Chief Compliance Officer for Canada

NEW YORK, NY, TORONTO and CALGARY, AB--(Marketwire - September 9, 2009) - Barclays Capital (LSE: BARC) today announces the senior appointments of Ian Montgomery as Chief Operating Officer of Canada and John Kennedy as Chief Compliance Officer of Canada. In their new roles, Mr. Montgomery and Mr. Kennedy will support the execution of the firm's strategy in Canada.

Mr. Montgomery will be based in New York and will report to Justin Bull, Chief Operating Officer of Global Markets. As COO, Mr. Montgomery will be responsible for coordinating front office activities in Canada, ensuring a single point of contact for all matters relating to Canada and the firm's Canadian legal entities. Mr. Montgomery joined the firm in 2003 and assumes this new responsibility in addition to his current role as COO for Principal Credit at Barclays Capital. Mr. Montgomery received his MBA from INSEAD, his MA from the London School of Economics and his BA from Trinity College at the University of Toronto.

Mr. Kennedy will be based in Toronto and will report to Alex Guest, Head of Global Futures, BARX and eCommerce Compliance, with responsibility for Canadian operations. Mr. Kennedy will be responsible for coordinating compliance oversight of all matters relating to the firm's Canadian businesses, leveraging his 20 years of legal and compliance experience in the Canadian financial services industry. Prior to joining Barclays Capital, he was the Director of Compliance for Fidelity Investments in Toronto and before that, the Chief Compliance Officer for Altamira Financial Services. Mr. Kennedy received his LLB from Queens University and his BComm from Concordia University.

Today's appointments underline the firm's commitment to Canada and the strategic expansion of Barclays Capital's businesses in the country. In January 2009, the firm appointed Tim Kitchen as Managing Director and Head of Investment Banking in Canada. Based in Calgary, Mr. Kitchen oversees the firm's Toronto and Calgary investment banking teams, and leads coverage of the firm's key Canadian Natural Resources clients. In October 2007, the firm announced the appointment of Sandra Godard as Managing Director of Barclays Canada Limited, having responsibility for extending the firm's premier and core client initiatives in the Canadian market.
