BariaMed® Program, Designed to Improve Post-Bariatric Surgery Outcomes, Has Been Announced

Slow Control, Interaction Healthcare, and LNC Laboratories Partner to Wrap Services Around Bariatric Surgery

PARIS, FRANCE--(Marketwired - Dec 17, 2013) - A new program, BariaMed®, will incorporate a serious game and a connected spoon, BariaSpoon®, to support patients in their nutritional and behavioral rehabilitation after bariatric (obesity) surgery. BariaMed is a program that offers a behavior-change tool, software that collects data, nutrition products and oversight by a medical specialist.

The BariaSpoon is a "smart utensil" which helps control the rate at which patients eat. Slow Control, who is also the producer of the HAPIfork connected fork, developed the underlying technology. The program's software by Interaction Healthcare allows learning, improvement and reporting of patient behaviors. The nutrients and services by LNC Laboratories help manage the risks of nutritional deficiencies.

When bariatric surgery is indicated today in the treatment of obesity, it is a solution that simultaneously requires a profound change in the patient's lifestyle.

Specifically, eating habits must change. Successful outcomes depend on assisting the patient before and after surgery to control quality, quantity and timeliness of food intake. This forges the new behaviors that are the cornerstones of long-term success.

By combining their expertise, Slow Control, LNC and Interaction Healthcare have developed a method that will provide this necessary support for the patients.

"Beyond connected devices and 'quantified self', inducing a change in behavior is the challenge of the 'modified self' -- how to affect the course of chronic disease", says Jacques Lépine, CEO of Slow Control.

The BariaSpoon is expected to ship in April 2014.
