Baroness Taylor to Visit Dara's Almondbank Site in Perth

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Jan. 25, 2008) -

Attention: news, industrial and defence correspondents

Baroness Taylor will visit DARA's Almondbank site in Perth today to meet with senior union representatives, staff and management.

Welcoming Baroness Taylor's visit to the Almondbank site, Unite national officer, Ian Waddell says,

"We're pleased that Baroness Taylor will witness first hand the hard work that the DARA staff undertake to support the work of the British forces on the front line.

The workforce at DARA are working flat out to keep helicopters flying at a time when they are needed most on the frontline in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The union believes that the skills and experience of the DARA workforce are a critical strategic asset and vital for the nation's defence. We firmly believe that the Government should retain these crucial skills in the public sector under their direct control."

The government is proposing that the Defence Aviation Repair Agency's rotary wing and components (RW&C) business is sold to the Canadian owned Vector Aerospace. The union believes there is too much risk in selling this business to a private sector. The union is hoping that the MoD will reconsider its proposals and that the RW&C's business will remain as part of the MoD within the new Defence Support Group enabling the MoD to retain strategic capability for helicopter support.

Notes to editors: Ian Waddell, Unite national officer will be available for interview.
