BarrCana Homes Inc.: Alberta's Mexico Connection is Good News in Barrhead

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - June 6, 2008) - 54 workers from Chapala, Mexico arrived in Barrhead today to start their 2-year work contracts with BarrCana Homes Inc.; serving as construction labourers and finishers in Alberta's flourishing home building industry.

Since opening its 160,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Barrhead in 2007, BarrCana Homes Inc., not unlike many industries in Alberta, has experienced a severe labour shortage. With the support of local MLA Ken Kowalski and various provincial and federal contacts, BarrCana Homes Inc. initiated a foreign worker recruitment program based on clear objectives. The company planned to hire 325 workers over a two year period and after much research, determined it would search in Mexico for its foreign workers. The company also wanted to ensure that it developed a relationship directly with potential workers and ultimately improve the quality of life for all residents living in the workers' home community.

The community of Chapala, in the State of Jalisco (Alberta's sister State of 10 years) was selected after an agreement to pursue the development of a twinning relationship between Barrhead and Chapala Regions was made in November of 2007. In December and January, BarrCana Homes Inc. entered into an agreement with the region of Chapala to organize and formalize a worker recruitment program. The municipality of Chapala, lead by their progressive Mayor, Gerardo Degollado assisted BarrCana with hosting job fairs, translation and pre-screening activates. In early January 2008, BarrCana representatives traveled to Chapala to interview over 300 applicants. Upon receipt of a favourable Labour Market Opinion from Service Canada in February for up to 325 foreign workers, BarrCana Homes Inc. was able to begin offering contracts to workers qualifying as construction labourers and finishers.

"We are very pleased to welcome this group of skilled workers to BarrCana" said John Bennett, President & CEO, BarrCana Homes Inc. "They are incredibly enthusiastic and bring their expertise to our production line which will help us to increase efficiency so that we can meet the needs of our customers in a timely fashion."

The first group of 54 workers starts work at BarrCana's Barrhead plant this week, with groups of 65 and 75 additional workers scheduled to arrive later this summer.

The community of Barrhead has been very receptive to the workers arrival. The Town and County Councils have been supportive and many citizens have assisted by preparing accommodations and special events and programs to welcome and support the workers.

BarrCana Homes Inc. is a state-of-the-art manufactured and modular housing production facility operating two production lines employing upwards of 200 workers, providing significant economic and environmentally-friendly benefit to Barrhead community.
