Barrie New Home Market Continues to Expand

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 9, 2010) - Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) released preliminary second quarter 2010 new home construction figures for the Barrie Census Metropolitan Area1 (CMA) today. A total of 200 homes were started in the most recent quarter, up from the 66 starts in the second quarter of 2009. Single-detached homes represent a significant portion of new construction followed by apartments and row homes. There were no semi-detached starts this quarter. In the first half of this year total starts in Barrie have increased significantly compared to the same period last year. The majority of increased new construction is in single-detached homes.

"The housing market showed considerable recovery in the second quarter", commented CMHC's Barrie Market Analyst, Edgard Navarrete. "The job market, in particular, full-time employment continued to improve, and with interest rates low, people were willing to take on the commitment of a new home purchase." added Navarrete.

1 Statistics Canada defines a census metropolitan area (CMA) as one or more adjacent municipalities integrated with an urban core. A CMA must have a total population of at least 100,000 of which 50,000 or more must live in the urban core.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally sustainable and affordable homes. CMHC also provides reliable, impartial and up-to-date housing market reports, analysis and knowledge to support and assist consumers and the housing industry in making vital decisions.
