Barrie's Rental Market Tightens

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 9, 2010) - Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) released its Fall 2009 Rental Market Report for the Barrie Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) today. Highlights of the Report are as follows:

  • Barrie's vacancy rate decreased to 3.4 per cent in October 2010 from 3.8 per cent in October 2009.
  • A weaker pull to homeownership in the second half of 2010 kept more people in rental.
  • The number of units and rents in the secondary rental market were essentially unchanged from a year ago.

"Despite an improving economy, a smaller pool of first-time buyers and flatter wage growth has decreased the shift to homeownership in Barrie," noted Edgard Navarrete, CMHC Market Analyst for the Barrie area. "This has put downward pressure on the vacancy rate," added Navarrete.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally sustainable, and affordable homes - homes that will continue to create vibrant and healthy communities and cities across the country.
