Basement Finishing Can be a Better Option Than Selling Your Home This Spring

Rediscover the space you already have and enjoy a move-free summer

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - April 29, 2014) - Spring in Canada signals the start of peak moving season when the greatest inventory of homes are put on the market and moving trucks are booked for the summer months. Some Canadian residential real estate markets - including large urban markets in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario - are red-hot, complete with bidding wars on desirable homes and houses snatched up within hours or days of being listed.

Moving can bring with it a great deal of stress and expense, but is there another alternative for homeowners seeking additional living space? The answer is "yes" and it is right under your feet in the form of a basement renovation. Whether you need extra bedrooms, an office, playroom or simply more space to live, a basement renovation can be a wise investment, as well as save you the time and money required to sell an existing home, and then source and purchase a new one.

The key to any successful basement renovation is investing in quality materials that will help create a warm and inviting living space for years to come. This all begins with the right subfloor because a good subfloor will address a myriad of issues, such as helping to prevent squeaks, absorb sound and protect your finished flooring from moisture.

"It is easy to get caught up in the visible stages of a renovation," says Bryan Baeumler, President of Baeumler Quality Construction and popular HGTV star of House of Bryan, Leave It to Bryan, Canada's Handyman Challenge and Disaster DIY and spokesperson for DRIcore® Products. "Selecting paint, lighting and finishings can be a lot of fun, but you need to take the necessary first steps to guarantee years of enjoyment. Make sure to invest in a subfloor that keeps your living space comfortable and warm."

DRIcore® R+ is an innovative, new insulated subfloor panel system that can either be completed with a finished floor or left as is with just a few coats of polyurethane. DRIcore® R+ is DRIcore®'s newest basement finishing product and an alternative to the company's very popular subfloor product, which has been available in North American markets for more than 10 years. With an R-value of 3, DRIcore® R+ will significantly improve the warmth and comfort of a basement, while providing all the traditional benefits of DRIcore® Subfloor.

Specifically designed to insulate basement floors, DRIcore® R+ can raise the temperature for finished floors by up to 5.6° to 10.6° F (R = 3). The secret to the DRIcore® R+ system is that the engineered wood core never touches the concrete floor. Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) foam on the underside raises the floor up off the cold concrete, creating a permanent air space, ensuring that the finished floor remains warm and dry.

"If you are thinking of a renovation this spring, take the necessary steps to ensure the warmth and comfort of your family for years to come," says Baeumler. "Installing DRIcore® R+ is the essential first step in protecting your valuables against surface moisture accumulating on your concrete floor - something standard underlays won't do."

DRIcore® R+ has a 25-year warranty and is available at The Home Depot Canada.
