COLUMBUS, OH--(Marketwire - Apr 25, 2011) - Battelle's President and CEO Jeff Wadsworth has named Battelle veteran Martin Toomajian as President of Battelle's newly formed Energy, Environment and Material Sciences Global Business.
Toomajian, 48, was most recently VP of Operations for the National Security Global Business, with responsibility for the execution of over $800 million of research and development.
This reorganization pulls together three existing technical areas within Battelle that are increasingly interlinked in today's economy: energy technology, environmental science, and materials engineering. The business will support R&D efforts to address the needs of five major markets:
- Oil, Gas, Coal, and Metals Mining
- Industrial and consumer products
- Government and regulatory markets
- Utilities
- Alternative energy

The group's expertise is vast and includes work for both government and commercial clients in bio-fuels from cellulosic feeds; carbon management; fuel cells and power storage; advanced membranes; fuel reformers; electric grid management; pipeline safety; water treatment and purification; ocean and marine sciences; environmental risk assessment and mitigation; and advanced materials development and energy systems.
Toomajian joined Battelle as a principal research scientist, where he initially conducted applied research in support of the U.S. and Russian chemical weapons demilitarization programs. He quickly transitioned to operations management, where he oversaw more than 3,400 scientists, engineers and technicians who conduct over $800 million in business for Battelle.
He is a recent Distinguished Graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, where he earned a Masters Degree in National Resource Management. Toomajian also earned Master of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees in chemical engineering from Michigan State University and the University of Michigan, respectively. A former U.S. Army officer and teacher at West Point, he has taken numerous executive education business classes from the University of Michigan, Ross School of Business, is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio, and is a co-author of one U.S. patent.
