Bay Street RFC, a club which pulls its members primarily from the financial and legal communities in downtown Toronto, were crowned as the ScrumMasters of Bay Street at Yonge Dundas Square on July 21st. The competition was part of Rugby Canada's 1st Annual "Scrum in the Square", a charity event created to raise awareness and funds for Prostate Cancer Canada and to promote the international rugby match between Canada and the USA taking place on August 6th, 2011 at BMO Field.

On a sweltering day that came close to being Toronto's hottest on record, Rugby Canada took over Yonge Dundas Square with various rugby challenges, including a DHL-sponsored ball kicking simulator and an opportunity to win tickets to the Canada v. USA game by correctly guessing the number of rugby balls in a Steam Whistle Brewery delivery van.

The ScrumMasters of Bay Street challenge invited corporate and club teams of three to take on the ScrumMasters, which is much like a football pushing sled and can accurately measure the force of a push, with the team generating the greatest force being declared the ScrumMasters of Bay Street. In order to vie for that coveted title, teams were asked to raise money with the proceeds going to benefit Prostate Cancer Canada.

The competition amongst the teams was as fierce as the heat, but it soon became clear that Bay Street RFC's 1st team consisting of Peter Shippen, Dave Tait and Philippe Rouanet were going to be tough to beat. The other teams, including Bay Street's 2nd team of Geoff Campbell, Chris Boyak and Alex Austin were strong contenders, but Bay Street RFC #1 sealed the win with a hit of over 1,800lbs of force to become the ScrumMasters of Bay Street!

Thanks to Rugby Canada, and its sponsors DHL and Steam Whistle Brewery, for a well organized event and to Justin Trudeau, the popular liberal MP, who was on hand to witness the activities, and enjoyed taking his own turn at mastering the scrum machine.
