Bayless Behavioral Health Solutions Awarded Federal Grant for Early Childhood Development Initiative

Education and Prevention Programs to Foster Healthy Development of Children Living in Zip Codes With Arizona's Highest Adult Incarceration and Recidivism Rates

PHOENIX, AZ--(Marketwire - January 13, 2011) - Bayless Behavioral Health Solutions, a leading Valley provider of behavioral health services, was named as the local lead agency for a three-year federal grant from Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). $1.8 million was awarded for the Project LAUNCH grant that will provide early childhood development and prevention programs to families with children from birth to age eight in the South Phoenix zip codes 85040 and 85041 -- zip codes with 10 times the national average of adult incarceration and recidivism rates.

"The purpose of Project LAUNCH is to promote child wellness -- a state of positive physical, emotional, social and behavioral health -- and to increase the factors that support healthy development for children, helping them thrive in a safe, supportive environment and enter school ready to learn and able to succeed," said Richard Crislip, VP of Clinical Services at Bayless and Chairman of the Project LAUNCH Community Council, which is comprised of South Phoenix representatives including state officials and those in social services, education, and the department of corrections. "We will be focusing on the coordination of services requisite to promote a healthy life with positive development free from substance abuse and crime for current and future generations of the South Mountain community."

With the grant for early childhood development, Bayless will be working with established community resources and trusted leaders to educate families and prevent behavioral problems in the future. The hope is to start a grassroots movement in the community that leads to lower crime and substance abuse rates when these children grow up. These partnering agencies include:

  • Phoenix Children's Hospital
  • Black Family and Child Services
  • Southwest Human Development
  • First New Life Baptist Church
  • Greater Phoenix Urban League
  • Mountain Park Health Center
  • Rainbow Pediatrics
  • Roosevelt School District

"Unfortunately, Arizona has been unsuccessful with the Project LAUNCH initiative in the past," states Justin Bayless, President of Bayless. "This time, Bayless will succeed because of our strong community ties and partnerships -- developed over the past 30 years -- which will help identify at-risk children and families who will benefit from these programs. We strongly believe that using services that are already trusted by the community will boost participation in the program, resulting in a high success rate."

The Project LAUNCH program will be headquartered at the new Bayless South Phoenix Family Clinic, which opens Tuesday, January 18. The 4,000 square-foot facility is located on two acres of land at 9014 South Central Avenue, and includes a large recreation field to enhance mental health treatment through physical activity. The new clinic will treat children, adolescents, adults and senior citizens. Aside from the Project LAUNCH program, other services provided at the South Phoenix location include:

  • Comprehensive Behavioral Health Services
  • Early Childhood Development Programs
  • Intensive Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment for Adolescents
  • Tele-psychiatry (allows clients to video-conference with care providers for faster and more affordable care).
