BBQ Weather Fires Up a Home Insurance Warning from Swinton

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - April 25, 2011) - As the unusually warm weather for this time of year sets to continue homeowners around the UK are dusting off the BBQ to fire it up for the first time this year.

However, Swinton, the UK's leading high street retailer of home insurance is warning homeowners about the damage that can be caused by BBQs when they are left unattended or not looked after properly.

Swinton surveyed 1,200 homeowners and 67% said they are planning a BBQ over the double bank holiday weekend, while 9% said a BBQ had damaged their property in the past.

Swinton is offering the following tips to people planning a BBQs this summer
  • Ensure that children and pets are kept away from the BBQ, they can become extremely hot

  • Ensure the BBQ is stable, on a flat surface and away from sheds, trees or anything flammable

  • Do not leave the BBQ unattended, even for a couple of minutes

  • Do not light a BBQ indoors or in a closed space

  • Make sure the wind is blowing away from you when you light the BBQ

  • Never ever pour flammable liquids on the BBQ
