BC Craft Brewers Guild Raises a "Cheer" for BC Government Announcement on Support for Local Brewers

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - May 20, 2016) - The BC Craft Brewers Guild applauds government's recent announcement to support the BC craft beer industry. The announcement includes different levels of relief including avenues for growth and the reduction of red tape to keep breweries focused on supplying the BC consumer with their favourite local craft beer. A significant reduction in small & regional brewers' markup will provide all BC craft breweries regardless of size, a major benefit for years to come.

"With over 70 BC craft breweries in the BC Craft Brewers Guild, this announcement has something for all members," says Ken Beattie, Executive Director, BC Craft Brewers Guild." While some BC breweries are looking to expand after close to thirty years in business, others are beginning their journey in their first few years. This announcement ensures existing breweries can grow and expand, while fostering an environment for new breweries to flourish as well."

Cash flow and funds required to expand their growing businesses are paramount with the booming BC craft beer business. The Province's elimination of revenue remittance to government will help keep funds available for continued growth. Breweries now have more flexibility to hire employees, order new tanks and open up new markets. Recent government initiatives such as expanded brewery tasting lounges and local retail programs have already shown success and more British Columbians are gaining access to their favourite local craft beer.

"We've been involved in the Liquor Review process with Parliamentary Secretary John Yap since day one" says Beattie, "and further consultation with Minister Oakes and her ministry in the last year have resulted in the announcements today. The BC craft beer industry is very appreciative of government's hard work and recognition of how important our industry is to the province of BC and all members in all corners of the province will be benefitting immediately from this news."

Craft breweries and craft beer-owned brewpubs employ roughly 2,500 people throughout B.C. and have invested over $100 million in equipment and expansion in the past two years alone. In 2016, 28 new Craft Breweries are expected to open in communities throughout B.C.-representing 30% growth.
