BC Safety Authority: Do You Know a Safety Champion?

Nominations open for Lieutenant Governor's Awards for Public Safety 2009

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Aug. 18, 2009) - The fifth annual Lieutenant Governor's Awards for Public Safety is seeking nominations to honour British Columbians for their outstanding contributions to public safety. These can be for an individual, organization or a group of people in the community who should be recognized for making British Columbia safer.

The awards program is presented by the British Columbia Safety Authority (BCSA) under the auspices of the Hon. Steven Point, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. The three award categories are:

- Lifetime Achievement

- Exceptional Contribution to Public Safety: Individual

- Exceptional Contribution to Public Safety: Organization

"There are those among us who champion the cause of safety in our province," said Harry Diemer, BCSA's President and CEO. "The Lieutenant Governor's Awards for Public Safety honour and celebrate those who dedicate themselves to make our communities and workplaces as safe as possible."

Preference will be given to nominees related to one or more of the industry sectors overseen by the BCSA, including:

- amusement devices

- boilers, pressure vessels and refrigeration systems

- electrical equipment and systems

- elevating devices such as elevators and escalators

- gas appliances and systems, including hydrogen

- passenger ropeways such as aerial trams and ski lifts

- railways, including rapid transit

This year's awards will be presented at a luncheon on Nov. 25, 2009, at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

The goal of the Lieutenant Governor's Awards for Public Safety is to promote safe practices, procedures, behaviours and attitudes. The awards recognize those who demonstrate exceptional leadership, achievement and innovation in the promotion of safety in British Columbia.

Award recipients will be selected by the Lieutenant Governor's Public Safety Selection Committee, which includes a senior staff member of the BC Safety Authority, representatives from safety organizations, and respected individuals in the safety field.
