VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - March 3, 2014) - In recognition of Fraud Prevention Month, the British Columbia Securities Commission today launched "Take a Shot at Fraud", an online contest where participants can test their fraud awareness and enter to win a signed Canucks jersey, two tickets to a Canucks game and one night's accommodation.
The BCSC will also sponsor the Canucks Open Practice on March 22, 2014, where attendees can "Take a Shot at Fraud" in person - fans will attempt to score on a replica of the BCSC's fictional fraudster David, from its Be Fraud Aware commercials. Everyone who participates will be entered to win a signed Canucks jersey, which will be awarded that day.
"Our goal is to raise awareness of investment fraud and show people how to spot it, avoid it and report it," said Pamela McDonald, BCSC's Director of Communications and Education. "The Canucks open practice and our online contest are great opportunities to connect with investors of all ages."
Research conducted by the BCSC shows that many investors lack the knowledge and understanding they need to make sound investment decisions. For those who fall victim to investment fraud, the impact is devastating.
Being an informed investor is the best defence against investment fraud. Investors can educate themselves by visiting InvestRight.org, where they will find many tools and resources to help them avoid investment fraud, assess their risk tolerance, or research an investment. The BCSC also educates British Columbians of all ages on the importance of financial life skills, from high school students to retirees.
