B.C. Small Businesses Highly Value Mentors but Lack Awareness of Available Mentor Programs, Study Reveals

New MentorshipBC online resource helps connect small businesses with mentors

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Nov. 12, 2013) - MentorshipBC, a new online search tool designed to help small business owners access mentor programs in B.C., announced today the significant results of a province-wide study on the state of small business mentorship in the province. Conducted by the Mustel Group, the MentorshipBC Small Business Survey examined key trends and information relating to small business mentorship in British Columbia.

Key findings of the survey revealed that small business owners in B.C. value mentors highly and have reaped tremendous benefits from mentor relationships, including personal, professional and overall business growth.

However, one glaring finding highlighted the lack of awareness on the benefits of small business mentorship, and pointed directly to a further low awareness of mentor programs and services available. A staggering 84 per cent of small business owners who were surveyed reported they are not confident they aware of all the available mentor programs. This is an important conclusion, as nearly 60 per cent of all small businesses surveyed said they feel having a mentor is either "important" or "very important" for their business.

"The survey confirmed our belief that small business owners value mentors highly, but we were surprised at the lack of awareness of mentor programs in B.C.," said Dawn Wood of MentorshipBC. "This confirms that there's a pressing need for an easily accessible resource that connects small business owners with mentors - and MentorshipBC does just that."

The MentorshipBC Small Business Survey was conducted as a part of the November 1st launch of MentorshipBC.ca, a resource funded by the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training, to meet the need of B.C. entrepreneurs seeking access to the many mentor programs available across the province. The search tool aggregates existing mentorship programs to connect small businesses with mentors and resources - with the goal of building a stronger small business community in our province.
