bcMetals Corporation: Power Line for Red Chris Development Moves Closer to a Reality

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 17, 2007) - bcMetals Corporation (TSX VENTURE:C) announced today that the British Columbia Transmission Corporation (BCTC), the crown corporation responsible for BC's power transmission lines, updated the status of the proposed Northwest Transmission Line (NTL) project on January 15, 2007. The update is available on its website at:

In September 2006, BCTC disclosed the basis of estimate for the NTL project consisting of a 287kV extension to the existing powerline infrastructure from its current terminus at Meziadin Junction to Iskut along the Highway 37 corridor, together with an upgrade to the existing Skeena-Meziadin transmission line from 138kV to 287kV. In its January 15, 2007 update BCTC makes the following statement with respect to timing:

At this point BCTC is considering an in service date of fall 2009 for the section from Meziadin to Bob Quinn with a temporary connection to the existing 138kV line at Meziadin. Planning on the sections between Skeena located near the town of Terrace and Meziadin is still based on an in service date of fall 2010.

bcMetals is very encouraged by this development. Construction of the Red Chris mine would be completed by Fall 2009 if started this spring. The Company is prohibited from commencng construction on the project under the conditions of its Environmental Assessment Certificate without a viable source of power, a condition precedent also to its financing facility with Investec Bank UK Limited. Red Chris does not require the completion of the upgrade to the Skeena-Meziadin Junction section to commence operations.
