BCG Platinion Hires Noted Cybersecurity Expert Michael Coden

Recognized Authority on Protecting Critical IT Infrastructure Will Lead BCG Platinion's Cybersecurity Practice in North America

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Jul 14, 2016) - BCG Platinion, a subsidiary of The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) that provides technology architecture, implementation, digital, and risk services, has hired internationally recognized expert Michael Coden to lead its cybersecurity practice, the company announced today. He is joining BCG Platinion's New York metro office as an associate director. This BCG Platinion practice complements BCG's well-established global cybersecurity and IT risk management business, which provides business-focused technology risk advice.

Coden comes to BCG Platinion with more than 30 years of experience in high tech. Since 2003, he has been vice president at NextNine, a cybersecurity software firm that protects systems in critical infrastructure.

In addition, over the past two years, he has served as the associate director of the MIT Interdisciplinary Consortium for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity, which he cofounded. Known as MIT-(IC)3, the consortium -- headquartered at the MIT Sloan School of Management -- produces research on strategic, managerial, and operational issues related to cybersecurity.

In 2013 and 2014, Coden contributed to the development of President Obama's Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity Framework, working directly with White House National Security, the National Institute of Standards & Technology, and Department of Homeland Security staff. The White House recognized his leadership of the effort by sending a letter of appreciation.

"We are thrilled to have Michael joining us in this important leadership role," said Philip Panaro, the company's North America CEO, who is also based in New York. "He is not only a world-class authority on cybersecurity but also a visionary leader and seasoned business executive who understands the practical challenges of implementing cyber protection systems in large, complex organizations," said Panaro, who has more than 25 years of experience facilitating large-scale business transformations.

Coden has authored 16 patents on cybersecurity software and equipment, has written dozens of scholarly articles, and has delivered over 150 invited lectures on cybersecurity and related technology topics.

Coden earned his bachelor's in electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, his master's in business from Columbia University, and a second master's in mathematics from NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. He is an (ISC)2 Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).

"I'm delighted to be joining BCG Platinion to help broaden its offerings to North American clients and build the business, which is growing rapidly," said Coden. "We see a lot of potential to extend Platinion's capabilities in cybersecurity."

"A failure to address cybersecurity holistically can have severe consequences--which has moved the issue of cybersecurity from the exclusive realm of IT specialists to something very high on the agenda of senior business leaders," said Walter Bohmayr, a BCG senior partner who leads the firm's cybersecurity and IT risk management business.

Platinion was founded by BCG in 2000 in Germany to add technical depth and execution services to the firm's IT consulting capabilities. A North American subsidiary based in New York was established in 2014. In addition to cybersecurity, its services include:

  • Project management and technology implementation management
  • Technology, solutions architecture, and IT modernization
  • Agile transformation enablement
  • Digital transformation enablement
  • M&A and postmerger integration
  • Blockchain advisory support
  • Risk management and compliance services in financial institutions
