BCLC Turning Paralympic Dreams Into Reality

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - March 13, 2009) - With the official one-year countdown to the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games this week, BCLC is helping Canadian athletes prepare for the podium.

As an Official Supporter of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, BCLC is sending British Columbians to the 2010 Winter Games through prizes on SportsFunder lottery games.

"It takes a community to raise an athlete and with generous support of organizations like BCLC and the SportsFunder program, athletes have a real opportunity to live their dreams, my dream is competing in the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games," said Josh Dueck, Canadian Para Alpine Ski team member, four-time Canadian Champion, and 2009 World Champion. "I want to be the best sit skier in the world. Having access to this support is essential for my success."

Through SportsFunder, sport organizations for disabled athletes receive funding to help athletes with travel, coaching, sport science and competitions. SportsFunder beneficiaries: Team BC, KidSport, Coaching and Leadership Development and Youth Travel Assistance have programs directly supporting amateur Paralympic athletes in B.C.

"SportsFunder helps develop the athletes of tomorrow," explained Minister Rich Coleman. "Our goal is for every athlete to benefit and actively participate in sports in their community."

Proceeds generated from the sale of SportsFunder products help support amateur athletes in B.C. To date, more than $4.1 million has been raised for amateur athletes, helping over 12,000 kids throughout B.C. play sports.

"SportsFunder beneficiaries make it possible for athletes to compete. What many people don't realize is that when they purchase a SportsFunder lottery ticket, they're helping support amateur athletes," said BCLC President & CEO, Michael Graydon. "BCLC proudly displays the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games logos on our advertisements and has incredible images of athletes on both BCLC offices."

The BCLC 2010 Winter Games Dome will be touring the province this summer visiting community festivals where attendees will have a chance to win event tickets to the 2010 Winter Games. During the one-year countdown celebrations for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, six lucky people won tickets to the men's 1500m speed skating event.

Paralympian's Daniel Wesley, Sonja Gaudet and Todd Nicholson have all visited with BCLC employees to share their unique and inspiring stories and expectations for Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games.
