BCMA Congratulates SportMedBC and the BCAA for Achieving Winning Results in Promoting Health and Wellness in British Columbia

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - June 9, 2006) - Helping British Columbians feel better about themselves and achieve a better quality of life are the motivating factors behind this year's BCMA Excellence in Health Promotion award winners. Being lauded for their leadership through advocacy and project work in health promotion and prevention are SportMedBC and the BC Automobile Association Traffic Safety Foundation.

Since its development in 1996, SportMedBC has supported, managed, and promoted its InTraining Walk/Run Program that encourages health and fitness for those interested in adopting a healthier lifestyle. More widely known as the Sun Run walk/run clinics that take place each January through April, the 13 week program helps more than 4,000 British Columbians every year safely and comfortably reach their running and walking goals.

The BCAA established the Traffic Safety Foundation in 2000. Although dedicated to reducing crashes and injuries involving all road users, the focus of the Mature Drivers Program is to ensure that seniors remain safe and proficient when behind the wheel. It is recognized that remaining independent and mobile is extremely important to maintain the well-being of seniors. Working closely with community groups, the Mature Drivers Program provides workshops, web resources, and videos as practical tools for use by seniors and their families.

The BCMA's Excellence in Health Promotion Awards recognizes the special efforts of individuals, BC-based non-profit organizations, or BC-based companies working to improve the health and safety of British Columbians. It is also an opportunity to demonstrate leadership and to collaborate with others to promote health and wellness around the province. These actions must show ingenuity and creativity, and have resulted in change with the potential for positive, long-term improvement. The BC Medical Association aims to foster and encourage further health promotion activities.

The awards will be presented at the BCMA's Annual General Meeting being held Saturday, June 10th, at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre Hotel. The awards ceremony will take place at 6:00pm in Pavilion Ballroom D.
