BC's Mining Community Celebrates Opening of the BC Children's Hospital BioBank

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Nov. 5, 2014) - Mining for Miracles (M4M), BC's mining community's longstanding fundraising campaign for BC Children's Hospital, is celebrating after raising $2.66 million in 2013 and 2014 toward the development of the BC Children's Hospital BioBank, the first pediatric institutional biobank in Canada.

The group marked the official unveiling of the biobank at a recognition event held at the Child & Family Research Institute at BC Children's Hospital on November 4.

Biobanking is a new and indispensable research tool that holds the potential to improve treatments and find cures for diseases affecting millions of children around the world. The BC Children's Hospital BioBank will facilitate breakthrough medical discoveries that will improve the lives of children suffering from debilitating and life-limiting diseases.

"We are extremely thankful to Mining for Miracles for their support of the BC Children's Hospital BioBank," said Dr. Suzanne Vercauteren, director of BC Children's Hospital BioBank. "Without the generosity of the mining industry, we would not be able to set up this new and incredibly important facility at BC Children's Hospital."

Mining for Miracles' success relies on the generosity of many individuals and corporations. Hundreds of mining, exploration and development companies, service providers and suppliers across BC, Alberta, the Yukon and Northwest Territories, and these companies' employees, friends and family, contributed to the total funds raised in support of the BC Children's Hospital BioBank.

"This initiative is another example of BC Children's Hospital's commitment to building centres of excellence in pediatric care. Children and families in British Columbia are accustomed to the high standard of care provided at BC Children's Hospital, and the research supported by this facility will benefit children worldwide," said Jason Weber, co-chair of Mining for Miracles. "Mining for Miracles is proud to support Canada's first institutional pediatric biobank at BC Children's Hospital."

The partnership between BC Children's Hospital Foundation, BC Children's Hospital BioBank and Mining for Miracles is a leading example of how industry, institutions and not-for-profit organizations can work together to provide world-class health care and services to the children and families of British Columbia.
