BearingPoint Joins Desertec Initiative

Consultancy supports biggest initiative for sustainable power generation worldwide

FRANKFURT ON THE MAIN, GERMANY--(Marketwire - July 14, 2010) - Management and technology consultancy BearingPoint (www.bearingpointconsulting.com) has joined the Desertec Industrial Initiative, (Dii; www.dii-eumena.com) as of June 2010. As an Associated Partner, BearingPoint will support the biggest private sector industrial initiative for sustainable and climate friendly power generation, and will participate actively in the conception and implementation of various projects.

"Desertec is a visionary, global concept. Launching the Industrial Initiative is the first step towards its realisation in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Desertec has significant ecological and economic potential. It has global impact and is of high political relevance. We are convinced of both the initiative's urgency and feasibility, and we want to contribute our share," says Peter Mockler, Managing Partner of management and technology consultancy BearingPoint. "The challenge is to direct a process in which some of the major transnational energy and technology groups are actively involved, and to make it a success. As a partner, we add our management capabilities and operational skills as well as our expertise within the technology and energy sector."

With the construction of renewable energy sources such as solar thermal power plants in the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East, as well as wind and photovoltaic facilities, Dii's long-term goal is to satisfy both a substantial part of the energy needs of the producer countries and to meet about 15 per cent of Europe's electricity demand by 2050 and to reduce the dependence on decreasing and pollutive fossil or nuclear energy sources in the long run. Furthermore, the initiative targets a new era of economical cooperation between Europe and North Africa.

Paul van Son, CEO of the Dii: "A growing number of renowned partners fuels our initiative. Every new partner signals decision makers in energy and economic policy that our concept is a significant step towards long-term security of energy supply and climate protection, and that it is worth being supported by a favourable framework."
