Beat the Holiday Hustle & Bustle With a Good Night's Sleep

Ashley Sleep Offers a Guide to Staying Energized & Beating Holiday Stress This Busy Season

ARCADIA, WI--(Marketwire - Dec 5, 2011) - From the shopping to the decorations, the meal planning to the house guests, it's the most wonderful time of the year! But, if you're not careful, it may also be the most sleep-deprived time of the year. Losing sleep in order to accomplish all of your tasks may help you get it all done, but sacrificing good sleep may actually put a damper on your ability to enjoy the holidays.

Ashley Sleep, one of the fastest growing mattress brands in the world, offers tips to keep you feeling energized and free of holiday stress during the hustle and bustle of the season:

  • Take baby steps. Instead of waiting until the last minute to take care of everything, set aside an hour or so a day to do little holiday tasks. That way, holiday stress is minimized and you don't have to deal with other frantic procrastinators scurrying around the malls and the streets at a hectic pace.
  • Keep your evening routine. Baking, shopping and running around too close to bedtime can throw your brain into overdrive. It's important to relax and unwind before bed if you want to experience good sleep.
  • Ask for help. The holidays are a time for family, so everyone should be pitching in to make it a memorable occasion. Don't hesitate to ask for a hand with gift wrapping, decorations, shopping, picking up visitors at the airport, or planning your holiday menu.
  • Don't underestimate the power of cat naps. Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you're going to fall short in the good-sleep department. Research suggests that a 15- to 20-minute nap can do wonders for your energy level. However, you should avoid long naps in the afternoon, since they may disrupt nighttime sleep.
  • Watch what (and when) you eat. Part of the fun of the holiday season is all the delicious food! However, loading up on alcohol or too many sugary, caffeine-laden lattes too close to bedtime is not good -- since they can put a damper on good sleep. Also, if you're going to have a heavy meal, enjoy it earlier in the evening to avoid heartburn and other stomach ailments that can disturb your rest.

"With the New Year quickly approaching, it may also be a good time to start evaluating your sleep environment so you can achieve the ultimate good night's sleep in 2012," says Ben Thorud, Senior Vice President of Ashley Sleep. "If your pillows are more than a year old, it's time to replace them, since they can lose their supportive abilities. As for your mattress, if it's five- to seven-years old, you may want to ask yourself if it's offering the level of comfort and support you need for optimal rest."
