Beauport Class Action: St. Lawrence Cement Group Granted Leave to Appeal by the Supreme Court of Canada

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - May 3, 2007) - St. Lawrence Cement Group (TSX:ST.A) announced today that it has been granted leave to appeal from the judgment rendered on October 31, 2006 by the Quebec Court of Appeal regarding the Beauport class action.

St. Lawrence Cement Group is pleased that the Supreme Court of Canada has accepted to examine the important issues of environmental law and class actions raised by the Beauport case which are of concern to the Company and to the industry as a whole.

According to the judgment rendered by the Quebec Court of Appeal, St. Lawrence Cement Group was liable for damages in the context of a class action brought by the residents of Beauport, Quebec in relation to the operations of the Company's cement plant in that municipality from 1991 to 1997. The Company has recorded a pre-tax provision of $13.8 million as a result of this judgment, as reported in its 2006 annual report.
