Some of the most beautiful - and beastly - engineering projects won prestigious awards this month.

At a ceremony on April 20, Consulting Engineers of Ontario (CEO) announced the winners of the 2013 Ontario Consulting Engineering Awards.

Ottawa's beautiful Convention Centre near Parliament Hill and its sexy chalets on the Rideau Canal won two of the awards. Adjeleian Allen Rubelli Ltd., an engineering firm, built the Convention Centre to withstand earthquakes, amid many challenges during design and construction. Halsall Associates, another firm, built the chalets so that cranes could lift them 50 feet in the air and transport them from the canal to a storage area.

The most "beastly" award winner, however, was a project from engineering firm Hatch, which designed, manufactured and moved four, 780-tonne autoclaves for a gold-mining project in Dominican Republic. (An autoclave is a big container for processes that need high temperatures and pressures.) Hatch transported the monsters across the Pacific Ocean on the largest, heavy-lift ship ever launched, then, in Dominican Republic, slowly rolled them for 120 kilometers on an 18-day journey.

These and 10 other projects from Ontario engineering firms received awards this Saturday, April 20, 2013, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., at the Ontario Science Centre (770 Don Mills Rd.) in Toronto. For a list of winners, details and photos, please see:
