Bell Remains at the Top as the Leaderboard Shuffles at the BreconRidge Canadian PGA Seniors' PGA Championship

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - July 28, 2006) - David Bell of Windsor, Ont., solidified his spot at the top by firing a two-under par 70 in round two of the 2006 BreconRidge Canadian PGA Seniors' Championship at The Marshes Golf Club in Ottawa.

Bell's two day total of seven-under par 137 gives him a four shot lead over Hocan Olsson of Otterburn Park, Que., Claude Tremblay of Blainville, Que., and hometown favorite Graham Gunn of Ottawa, Ont.

"I just played another solid round on a great track," stated Bell. "With the names in this field I'm pleased to be at the top but I know I have to play another great round tomorrow with these guys chasing me."

Champions Tour player Dave Barr of Westbank, B.C. and Canadian Dan Halldorson of Brandon, Man., both shot even par 72's on Friday. Halldorson rebounded from an opening round of 78 while Barr's total of 145 leaves him eight shots off the pace.

First round co-leader Adam Brown of Dundas, Ont., shot an eight-over par 80 and now sits ten shots back of Bell. Brown got off to a great start with birdies on four of his first five holes but dropped from the leaderboard with a nine on the par-5 16th and an eight on the par-5 2nd

John Irwin of Summerside, P.E.I fired a one-under par 71 again on day two to secure the Super Senior title. Irwin, who is entered in both the Super Senior and the Regular Senior Division is thrilled to win the Super Senior title but would like to sweeten the pot by getting into the hunt for the Championship title.

"I've really been hitting the ball well this week but I'm just not making the putts that will put me at the top," said Irwin, Head Professional at Summerside Golf & Country Club. "This course has some birdies out there but it also has some 'others' as well."

Irwin, who celebrated his 60th birthday earlier this year, takes home $1,500 for his first Super Senior title.

Olsson, the 2005 Canadian PGA Senior Champion, will be playing in the final group again this year and prefers to be chasing the leader rather than having the lead.

"On this golf course I think I would prefer to be chasing the leader and trying to make birdies," said Olsson. "With the guys in this field and this type of golf course anything can happen."

Graham Gunn from the nearby Carelton Golf & Yacht Club made seven birdies in his second round and had the lowest round of day with a 68.

Sentimental favorite Frank Whibley of Orillia, Ont., claimed the Diamond Division (Ages 70 +) title with a final round 75. Whibley, who has been battling cancer, notified tournament officials only three days before the tournament that he would be able to play. At seventy-two years of age, Whibley did not show an ounce of rust with his game.

"I am just happy to be out here playing with these guys," stated Whibley, who wins $1,500 as the Diamond Division Champion. "I wanted to shoot my age and I almost did."

Whibley's two day total of 155 was good for a one shot victory over Doug Sullivan of Indian Mountain, N.B. and Doug Bruton of Bolton, Ont.

The 2006 Senior Champion will win $8,100 for the victory.

The $55,000 BreconRidge Canadian PGA Seniors' Championship is a three-day, 54-hole individual stroke-play competition open to Canadian PGA Professionals 50 and older, wraps up Saturday. The Super Senior (60 and older) and Diamond (70 and older) divisions was contested over 36 holes on Thursday and Friday.
