BELLINGHAM, WA--(Marketwired - Jan 30, 2014) - A longtime resident of Whatcom County will soon be moving, but luckily not too far. The Puget Sound Blood Center (PBSC) has broken ground at a new location, where its space, facilities and services can expand to meet the needs of the community. To ensure residents live long, healthy lives, the SpringHill Suites Bellingham is helping spread the word.
As part of its partnership with the new blood center, the hotel near Bellingham airport offers marketing advice to promote support for the new center within the community. SpringHill Suites Bellingham will help inform about the positive impact the new center will have and show residents how they can help. The initiatives will also inform about the services the center can provide due to its relocation.
With the new location, the PBSC expects an increase in platelet transfusions by as much as 10% over the next few years, which is more important than ever due to shortages in the region. Platelets, blood cells that clot to stop bleeding, have never been collected by PBSC before due to space and equipment limitations, and the new center will offer local donors, who in the past had to travel to Everett, a convenient location to make donations.
Platelet use is increasing up to 10% every year, and both Skagit and Whatcom counties use 1,700 platelets each year. Once the new center opens, the PBSC will be able to collect more than 1,000 units of platelets in its first year and supply them to 75 area hospitals that use platelets to support cancer patients, organ and bone marrow transplant patients and those having major surgery.
